The Window – A Moral Story

the_window-300x240

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour every day to drain the fluids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. In addition, every afternoon when the man in the bed next to the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing all the things he could see outside the window to his roommate.

The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods where all the activity and color of the outside world would broaden and enliven his world. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake, the man had said. Ducks and swans frolicked in the water while children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm amid flowers of every color of the rainbow. Great old trees graced the landscape and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind’s eye as the man by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Unexpectedly, an alien thought entered his head: Why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see anything? It didn’t seem fair. As the thought fermented, the man felt ashamed at first. However, as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy eroded into resentment and soon made him bitter. He began to brood and found himself unable to sleep. The thought “I should be by that window” now controlled his life.

One late night, as he lay staring at the ceiling, the man by the window began to cough. He was choking on the fluid in his lungs. The other man watched in the dimly lit room as the struggling man by the window groped for the button to call for help. Listening from across the room, he never moved, never pushed his own button, which would have brought the nurse running. In less than five minutes, the coughing and choking stopped, along with the sound of breathing. Now, there was only silence–deathly silence. The following morning, the nurse arrived to bring water for their baths. When she found the lifeless body of the man by the window, she felt sad and called the hospital attendant to take it away–no words, no fuss. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it all himself. He slowly strained to turn and look out of the window beside the bed. Much to his surprise, it faced a blank wall!

the_window2-300x240

Moral: The pursuit of happiness is a matter of choice. It is a positive attitude we consciously choose to express. It is not a gift that gets delivered to our doorstep each morning nor does it come through the window. Moreover, I am certain that our circumstances are just a small part of what makes us joyful. If we wait for them to get just right, we will never find lasting joy. The pursuit of happiness is an inward journey. Our minds are like programs, awaiting the code that will determine behaviors; like bank vaults awaiting our deposits. If we regularly deposit positive, encouraging, and uplifting thoughts; if we continue to bite our lips just before we begin to grumble and complain; if we shoot down that seemingly harmless negative thought as it germinates; we will find that there is much to rejoice about.

GIVE ‘EM HOPE CAMPAIGN – YOU ARE AN ANGEL

A poem found online by Correina MacRae. This was written for her Grandmother but seems so apt for the wonderful family here, who give their time and their hearts so willingly. Thank you all for being our angels of HOPE.

You are an Angel
Strong and smart
loving and sweet,
you are one of the
greatest people I ever
got to meet.
I’ll never forget you
you’re in my heart
and even though you’re
not with me
we’re not far apart.
You are an Angel
in everyone’s eyes
gentle and caring
for the good, you changed
everyone’s lives
You are an Angel
with a big heart and
a gentle smile.
When you’d do something
for someone you always went that extra mile.
You are an Angel
always there to lend
a helping hand
you were always so loving
and would always understand
You are an Angel
strong and smart
loving and sweet
you are one of the greatest
people I ever
got to meet.

BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS?

FURTHER TO THE REPORT A FEW DAYS AGO: This is the original article that lead to the Daily Mail taking up the “story”. Surely the Accrington Observer have blood on their hands , perhaps moreso than the Daily Mail, for sensationalising what should have been a private matter and something which the deceased teacher’s employer had dealt with respectfully.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: http://www.accringtonobserver.co.uk/news/local-news/accrington-schools-letter-parents-tells-1273948.

Previous Blog:

An online petition has been set up demanding that Daily Mail columnist Richard Littlejohn is fired in the wake of the death of a transgender primary school teacher.

littlejohnp

Lucy Meadows, 32, was found dead in her home in Accrington, Lancashire.Police confirmed her death was not being treated as suspicious.

Meadows previously taught at St Mary Magdalen’s School as a man, Nathan Upton, and was due to return after gender reassignment surgery. School authorities wrote to parents to tell them of the plan and that children should refer to her as Miss Meadows at the start of spring term.

The day after news of the teacher’s transition appeared in the local press, Littlejohn wrote a Daily Mail/Mail Online column entitled “He’s not only in the wrong body… he’s in the wrong job” in which he accused the 32-year-old of not caring for “the sensibilities of the children” and putting “his own selfish needs ahead of the wellbeing of the children”.

He added that Meadows’ transition would have a “devastating effect” on pupils.

The piece was then taken offline in the wake of Meadows’ death.

While the exact circumstances of the suicide are unknown pending a coroner’s report, supporters of Meadows have linked Littlejohn’s column to her death.

An online petition has requested a formal apology from Littlejohn and said that he should be fired or resign.

The petition says: “No one deserves to have their lives turned upside down for their gender identity being thrown into the national spotlight.

“The reason the parents who had a problem went to the Daily Mail is that there was no way to get her fired under equal opportunity law. So they tried to give the school bad press by saying how terrible it is that she is allowed to live her life freely.”

The petition has gained thousands of signatures.

While no direct link has been established between the column and Meadows’ death, David Green, legal adviser to Trans Media Watch, a charity for transgender people, said it was clear that the teacher was subject to a “monstering” by the press.

“These monsterings are quite common in respect of transgendered people,” he said.

Green told BBC Radio 4′s The World Tonight: “There is no public interest in the story whatsoever. The only part of the story which seems significant is that there is a gender reassignment, what used to be called a sex change.

“What makes it especially easy for tabloids is that transgendered people are very unlikely to fight back. They are usually members of the public and have no experience of dealing with media and all they want to do is to make it go away.

“In a way, tabloids treat transgendered people the way they would treat anybody if they could get away with it.”

Trans Media Watch submitted evidence to the Leveson Inquiry in 2012 which documented examples of how transgendered people have been hounded by the media.

Green added: “There is a sense that transgendered people are fair game for sensationalist reporting. These are people who are going through the most traumatic experiences you can imagine and they are suddenly humiliated by these stories in the tabloids.”

Headteacher Karen Hardman said: “She was a greatly valued member of our staff and we send her family and friends our sympathy and prayers.

“We are working closely with the county council and the diocese to ensure we offer our pupils and staff the support they need.”

This week, after being mocked in the press with an attack piece by the Daily Mail columnist Richard Littlejohn, schoolteacher Lucy Meadows committed suicide.

Lucy was raised male, but recently underwent a transition to live as female — which for Littlejohn was reason enough to attack her in his column. Leading with themocking headline “He’s not only in the wrong body… he’s in the wrong job”, Littlejohn belittled and harassed Meadows, referring to her decision as her “personal problems” and playing on the outdated scare tactic that LGBT people are a threat to children.

The vile article led to a witch hunt targeting Meadows. Newspapers offered to pay parents for a picture of her, and she complained of having to leave home by the back door and arrive early to school to avoid the packs of journalists.

Sign our petition to the Daily Mail: sack Richard Littlejohn, issue an apology, and institute an editorial review to ensure that this never happens again.

Richard Littlejohn has a long history of using his perch at the the Daily Mail to mock and harass others, from laughing at cerebral palsy to snide insinuation that ethnic minorities got their jobs through discrimination to incessant attacks on the LGBT community, Littlejohn has been a national disgrace.

Throughout the article, Littlejohn repeatedly referred to Lucy as “he”, and claimed that getting gender reassignment surgery showed that she didn’t care for the children she taught.

Littlejohn claimed that children don’t have the capacity to handle a gender transition — but kids are smart and don’t carry the bias that adults have absorbed over the years. Just take the experience our campaign manager Kaytee’s partner Max had when he came out to his little cousin as a transgender man. The cousin said “Oh, that makes sense. I always thought you were a boy. Now can we go play Legos?” Gender transition is only an issue for kids when the adults in their lives — many egged on by these sorts of offensive opinion pieces — make it out to be a problem.

The Daily Mail may thrive on controversy to sell its tabloid papers, but even it knows it went too far this time. In the wake of backlash, the Daily Mail removed the article from its website, but the damage has already been done.

Everyone has the right to say what they think, but mainstream publications like the Daily Mail shouldn’t support and promote this sort of hate. The Daily Mail needs to ensure that this never happens again — by not only yanking Littlejohn’s column and apologizing for the paper’s decision to run the hateful opinion piece, but alsoinstituting an editorial review policy that prevents discriminatory writing from ending up in its paper again.

Tell the Daily Mail that newspaper columns cannot be used for bullying and hate, and that Richard Littlejohn has no place in the papers.

GIVE ‘EM HOPE & REPAIR THE WORLD – DAVID E WATTERS

images (1)

We all have the potential to use our particular skills to educate and bring light to the world.

There are many ways to make a difference, many methods to repair the world.

Many of us can take a lifetime to understand and “accept” ourselves, even with the support of enlightened peers and family members.

Just imagine how it must be for those who grow up in the darkness of a conservative environment, where there is an active resistance to diversity; where family and the wider community are intolerant to homosexuality or gender variance.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people continue to live in a world where singular sexuality is promoted, binary definitions of gender prevail and where heterosexism dominates every aspect of culture.

For many individuals identifying as LGBT, there can be a social disconnection, not through choice but through their awareness of “otherness” and of a difference which is sadly still perceived as “less than”.

Developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst Erik Erikson famously said, “Someday, maybe, there will exist a well-informed, well-considered, and yet fervent public conviction that the most deadly of all possible sins is the mutilation of a child’s spirit”.

Yet, for those isolated individuals who are or perceive themselves to be without family support, the feelings of invalidity and hopelessness can be overwhelming and in recent times, the impact of this is still all too clearly and shockingly illustrated, with the tragic deaths, through suicide, of so many desperately lost, tormented and disenfranchised young people, who can find no other alternative than to prematurely leave this world.

There are so many ways to engage in social change, to participate in assisting others, and it is vital that we recognize and support the numerous local, national and international organisations which exist to celebrate diversity, advocate equality and assist the vulnerable to achieve the self-belief and confidence to make better and more positive life decisions.

We should not be complacent and presume that, without our support, organisations such as the Trevor Project will continue to exist. They are literally a lifeline providing support services to those who have all but lost hope; yet who have, in their time of crisis, found the courage to reach out.

Each and every one of us has a moral responsibility for our fellow man and we must take actions which make our society safer, fairer and more inclusive. Vigilance and discourse regarding mental health and suicide ideation will ensure that we uphold this obligation to support, encourage and uplift those who are vulnerable or at risk.
