TRANSFORMATIONAL CULTURAL CHANGE IN DETAIL
Equality and Diversity Training
THE HOPE PROGRAM
Delivering Diversity – Enhancing Equality
An accessible, interactive and inclusive program which is suitable for both staff and students within any educational environment.
The HOPE Program offers opportunities for staff and students to explore and celebrate their own uniqueness and is invaluable in that it can create a forum for the development of real and measurable cultural enhancement in terms of recruitment, retention, achievement and progression.
This program uses, as a starting point, the Equality Act 2010, and ensures that all members of your community gain knowledge and understanding of the importance of creating a safe and respectful space for everyone within your community.
The aims of this program are to:
Encourage a sense of community amongst the student body
Cover key concepts in a fast-paced, fun and interactive way
Ensure a standardised delivery of diversity education.
Offer strategies for embedding E & D into lesson planning
There is great potential for flexible delivery through interactive arts activities and, although suitable for all age groups, the program will be tailored to suit specific learners.
Engaging, Enjoyable and Interactive Workshops
Personal and professional development workshops utilizing Cognitive Behavioural and Performing Arts strategies.
These programs are an engaging, enjoyable, interactive and effective means to personal, professional AND organizational GROWTH and TRANSFORMATION.
Participants explore the origin of BELIEFS, challenge their accuracy, redefine those which create limiting THOUGHTS and learn strategies to make CHOICES to say and do only those things which bring themselves and others closer to emotional, intellectual, spiritual and professional fulfilment.

ARENT WE ALL SINNERS? GIVE ‘EM HOPE CAMPAIGN
SOME SIN MORE THAN OTHERS…
You are not a sinner – your life is as valuable and as god-given as any life. God doesn’t make mistakes and just because heterosexuals “appear” to be in the majority, that doesn’t make them God’s appointed representatives on earth and the only model of humanity.
We are not here to judge or be judged by any characteristic that labels us as in a minority and I’m sure that, like me, you do many more “Christian” things to better the lives of others than the so-called Christians who knock on my door to tell me that theirs is the way to the truth and the light.
I was busy organising an AIDS charity event last time they came knocking and had spent much of the previous day supporting a suicidal teenager, for example.
It didn’t matter to them that my street is full of the entire catalogue of religious beliefs and non-believers, they were on a mission to convert and convince us all that our lives were wrong. I’m all for “Love thy neighbour” but let’s love him as he is.
Using the term sin to describe my life, based on one characteristic, is limiting and dangerous. Worse of all, taking that word and believing it to be true, is when most damage is done to our self-esteem.
So, you, me, and all the others who have been labelled this way, by a follower of a book written many years ago and misinterpreted by millions of illiterates, should stop and think about what humanity should be about and forget the dogma-based bigotry that has been designed to control and suppress for far too long.
Taking the mangled “word of God” and using it as a tool to oppress and control; THAT is the deadliest sin of all.
Delivering RESPECT – Diversity in Education
I am currently delivering a cultural enhancement initiative at a college in the UK.
Called, the RESPECT CAMPAIGN, and initially a training program aimed at facilitating understanding of the Equality Act 2010, so that students develop an awareness of all 9 protected characteristics (disability, race, sexual orientation, religion and belief, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, marriage and civil partnership, sex and age), the initiative looks at how discriminatory behaviour towards anyone who holds one or more of these, and that means anyone, is unacceptable.
The Equality Act has brought together a range of separate laws which previously covered areas such as disability and race and has created a balanced and fair approach to how discrimination is viewed and responded to within law.
There is an obligation for service providers, including educational institutions, to comply with this legislation and train staff on equality and diversity issues.
The training was aimed at students to encourage more respectful behaviour towards others, within and outside the classroom, but, in order to do this, the tutors themselves have had to attend a variety of workshop sessions.
There is a tangible cultural shift and particular interest from certain staff and students who understand the relevance and importance of such training.
Recently, I’ve been invited to some lessons where students have asked more about the reasons for the RESPECT CAMPAIGN and they have wanted to know of any challenges and successes.
Two questions are below – more will follow in future blogs on this subject.
Question: Do you find it harder to implement the respect campaign within the vocational courses such as construction and mechanics?
Answer: Vocational courses, particularly those you mention, may have been more challenging potentially, or that may have been the assumption. By assuming this we may have been stereotyping these students as a group who share the historically sexist, perhaps homophobic, attitudes of a male dominated industry. Interestingly, it has been found that people of this generation are more open to diversity and this includes the students on these courses. Not all, of course, but many have a better understanding of and awareness of social inequality and for those who hold prejudiced views there has been an opportunity for them to express these and hear other views. Ultimately, we learn from others and the tutors have been a key part in delivering the training in a way which facilitates safe and open discussion.
Question: Are certain areas of the respect campaign more sucessful than others?
Answer: we structured the training in a way which allowed tutors time to build towards the more challenging parts, or less well understood parts, so that they had the confidence to find their own feet in how they approach the different topics. By giving tutors the resources, handbooks, power points, handouts and training in advance and by emphasising that their role is to facilitate, not teach, and to always remain unbiased, the tutors have no need to be experts themselves. Each issue, topic, is equally important and the students are only to know how prejudice of any form is unacceptable – in relation to how they behave in college and the workplace. We can’t change beliefs, but we can reinforce a better awareness that certain behaviours are not correct.

INVITATION TO “GIVE ‘EM HOPE”: Hi there. I’m hoping that you’ll share your inspiring and positive energy with the world through my Give ‘em Hope Campaign. The Give ‘em Hope Campaign is an inspirational online video initiative to inspire and uplift those who feel marginalised or isolated. We exist to bring hope to those who need it most.
The campaign was founded by David E Watters in early 2011 and has grown, with the support of numerous international cheerleaders and proactive participants. Stage Two of the campaign has included written stories of HOPE from those who have freed themselves from limiting labels and who can now celebrate their individuality.
Write your story or make and send your video to: DavidWatters@nbiassociates.co.uk
The purpose of this campaign is to encourage the benefits of living authentically. My view is that we should not be limited by labels that are imposed by others, if these labels are negative and wrong; especially when it comes to stereotyping and when the result may be lowered self-esteem and a possible impact upon an individuals ability to fulfil their personal potential.
Make us a video or write about this or something along these lines. Your story or your video can have such an impact and would be a welcomed addition to this campaign. Respect to you for all that you do. David E Watters

GIVE ‘EM HOPE INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GIVE ‘EM HOPE INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL 2012
24 JAN 2012
NBI Associates, in association with the Give ‘em Hope Campaign, announce the GIVE ‘EM HOPE INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL 2012.
Individuals and groups worldwide are invited, with the full support of NBI Associates, to hold Pro-Equality Music and Arts events in their local area throughout 2012.
These simultaneous celebrations of diversity should be aimed at a broad audience and may include a variety of art forms and musical styles.
The theme for 2012 is, “Tackling the “isms” Creatively” and participants are encouraged to offer music or artistic work which comments upon sexism, racism, disablism, ageism, homophobia and transphobia or any other area not listed here where people may experience prejudice, bullying or limiting labeling.
The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness of local and or national charitable organisations, to communicate a message of social equality and a commitment to community cohesion.
Director of NBI Associates and Give ‘em Hope Campaign Founder and Coordinator, David Equality Watters offers the following suggestions to those who may be interested in organising an event, “Your Give ‘em Hope Arts Festival can be large or small; anything from a single gig, art show or poetry reading to something bigger.
You can gather some friends in a single room or find a charitable venue who can lend you their space. Perhaps ask your school, college or workplace to stage an event. It’s all about supporting your choice of charities and promoting a sense of community cohesion. You may consider showing a selection of Give ‘em Hope videos or reading some of our stories…that’s an event in itself…..use our resources! There are no limits and no huge demands – this event is YOUR event. MAKE IT WHATEVER YOU WANT IT TO BE!”
All events will be promoted vigorously by NBI Associates and their media partners.
Contact David E Watters (Coordinator of the Give ‘em Hope Campaign) at DavidWatters@nbiassociates.co.uk to express an interest in organising an event in your area.

OUTLINE OF THE GIVE ‘EM HOPE CAMPAIGN
Director of NBI Associates, motivational speaker and writer, David E. Watters, has recently launched a youtube video campaign to inspire, encourage and uplift those who may feel disenfranchised or who may lack self-belief.
THE “Give ‘em Hope” Video Campaign IS AN INITIATIVE TO INSPIRE ALL YOUTH AND ADULTS WHO MAY DOUBT THEIR VALIDITY because ALL people, regardless of cultural heritage, physical or psychological ability, age, sexuality or gender identity, may feel self-doubt at various stages in their lives.
Watters is seeking individuals, couples and groups to share their stories, in whichever way they choose, in a bid to provide support and encouragement to anyone who may question their place in the world.
These stories of living authentically, with dignity and unlimited by labels will become a powerful toolkit to help others understand how self-perception determines the path that they choose and that life need not be a self-fulfilling prophecy when they improve self-concept, drive out fear and embrace new challenges as opportunities to learn and to grow.

JAKE GALLEON IS…
“I’m a tattooist working out of South East London. If you want any tattoo’s or just to discuss some ideas and get some advice, don’t hesitate to email me or message me here: colouryourbody@hotmail.com”
Jake is more than willing to help draw any custom work that’s floating around in your head but can’t get it out on paper!
Last October, it was my 40th birthday; I know, hard to believe that such a handsome and youthful (dare I say boyish?) face can be 4 decades old?
As a gift to myself I decided to get a tattoo; something personal, something significant and definitely something that I wouldn’t regret.
Now, even if your idea is awesome, even if it is utterly symbolic and meaningful, much can go wrong between concept and creation.
It is vitally important to take your idea to someone who is not only artistically creative and technically skilled but to someone who is sensitive to your needs, your fears even.
Jake is the son of my very dear, creative and sober friend Karen. She is also an artist, a photographer; something clever, in fact, like social anthropology…ANYWAY, I DIGRESS.
Jake has also been incredibly supportive of my Equality Advocacy work and totally understood my desire to permanently place my, well Harvey Milk’s, mantra on my arm: NEVER BLEND IN.
Having these words so beautifully emblazoned on my forearm has opened the door to so many incredibly inspiring conversations.
People, often students (who are also people), ask “why these words?”
I love that this gives me the opportunity to explain about Harvey, about equality and ultimately connect on a deeper level than I could if I were wearing say a suit and tie (or anything that didn’t distinguise me from the masses).
Tattoos, as far as I’m concerned, should be individual, unique and a personal statement to reflect identity. I’m no expert and I imagine that there are many theories on the significance, cultural history etc of tattoos but, for me, this is what they are; a symbolic use of language and/or imagery to define or express individual identity, perhaps even to reclaim ownership of one’s own body. Or is that getting too deep?
Anyway, Jake and I talked as he worked on my tattoo – we talked about anything and everything and, despite the slight discomfort, the afternoon was joyful, enlightening and has left me scarred (BUT IN A GOOD WAY).
I can’t begin to express my gratitude to this talented, highly professional, creative, artistic and fascinating young artist but what I can do is recommend him to you.
If you have any questions, comments then ask Jake.

///Jake Galleon///
Colour Your Body is the alias of up and coming independent tattoo artist Jake Galleon.
Jake is a tattooist who mainly specialises in large scale, Japanese inspired tattooing, also working in other established tattoo styles such as traditional western and black & grey. while also putting a fresh twist into every piece.
Although he is self taught, he learned and continues to learn a great deal from the people he works with, the people who have tattooed him and ultimately from the customer’s themselves.
Tattooing out of South East London where he was ‘born and bred’. Jake finds a lot of inspiration from his surroundings in his artwork and is proud of his heritage.
