I’M YOUR MAN

David E. Watters, a graduate of Trinity College of Music, London and the Institute of Education, University of London, has worked internationally as a performer, director and educator for more than 20 years, has taught literacy, drama and music within a wide variety of socially and culturally diverse settings and, as a personal and professional development associate with The Pacific Institute (www.pacificinstitute.co.uk), a personal tutor, freelance writer, public speaker and founding member of NBI Associates (www.nbiassociates.co.uk), is an Equality Advocate who brings inspiration and motivation, enhances personal efficacy and encourages excellence.

As a performer he has worked for Disney, Warner Brothers, English Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Mayfield Chamber Opera amongst many others.

As a teacher, David was most recently a Head of Department in Further Education with a 100% pass rate and a fantastic progression record; students currently studying at Laban, Rose Bruford, RADA,  Trinity College of Music. and working successfully within the industry – most recent success being Rachel Adedeji who reached the televised finals of X Factor 2009.

David, who regularly writes for www.ambiente.us, One Nation and Polari, has been championed by Stuart Milk, nephew of Harvey Milk and Equality Advocate, who has said: “I love your work, which is vital to show the richness of embracing and celebrating our wonderful diversity. As Harvey would say, you’re bringing medicine into the world that the world needs! Thank you!”

He is an inspirational, motivational speaker who most recently shared a platform with Peter Tatchell and Stuart Milk at the 17-24-30 No to Hate Vigil in Trafalgar Square, London.

http://www.nbiassociates.co.uk/Invite-DAVID-To-Speak-.html

David is currently finalizing his book, Never Blend In: The Legacy of Harvey Milk which supports and is supported by The Trevor Project and the Harvey Milk Foundation.

The book sets out to highlight and challenge social perceptions of the LGBT community; to understand the causes of low self-esteem and suicide ideation felt by many LGBT individuals and, through a unique collection of inspirational interviews with well known and everyday people, to inspire and encourage the younger generation, or anyone questioning their validity, to lead a balanced, fulfilling and dignified life.

Role models from education, entertainment, law enforcement, medical and emergency services, politics, religion and sports have participated in this accessible and much needed discourse to illuminate the reader’s journey of self-discovery and self- efficacy.

Openly LGBT and successful role model figures can play an enormous part in highlighting the wealth of possibilities available to young people. These people, who are successfully modeling admirable qualities and character traits such as determination, diligence, vision and consistent effort, can only serve to inspire and encourage the younger generation, or anyone questioning their validity, to lead a balanced, fulfilling and dignified life.

Notable voices in the book are Harvey’s colleagues, Anne Kronenberg, Tom Ammiano and Danny Nicoletta; Equality Advocate, Stuart Milk; actors Stephen Fry, Alan Cumming and Anthony Rapp; Human Rights Campaigner, Peter Tatchell; musician Darren Hayes (Savage Garden); Sordid Lives writer Del Shores; columnist, Michael Musto; filmmaker, Parvez Sharma; actress and businesswoman, Calpernia Addams; NBA star John Amaechi; Rabbi Denise Eger, Rev. David Weekley, Lt. Daniel Choi and authors Lesléa Newman and Tom Rob Smith.

We, as a community, are under or misrepresented in the media and this impacts upon how individuals are perceived and treated by society.  Positive, inspirational role models from the LGBT community can have an enormous impact on addressing this and can give hope to individuals who feel less valid and disenfranchised from society.

Most inspiring have been the “regular” people (the Scottish fireman, the Canadian concert pianist, the American professor, the South African artist or the student in Cardiff) who live with authenticity and, perhaps without realizing, are role models and inspirational figures to those whose lives they touch.

The “community” if such a thing exists is diverse but too many live in the shadows. My point, with this book, is that self worth determines our potential and that blending in is a direct result of feeling “less than”, feeling ashamed of how God (whatever that means to you) made you”.

Harvey Milk’s legacy, for this author, is the growing number of proud LGBT individuals who refuse to live lives limited by the judgment of others.

We can be part of society without blending in. To me it means living with 100% authenticity (as Dr Phil or Oprah might say!). We shouldn’t compromise our identity to be accepted and everyone regardless of sexuality or gender identity has a right to fully live.

Life need not be a self-fulfilling prophecy and by recognizing that our “truth” has been shaped through our relationships, our environment and our experiences, we can begin to change our perceptions, heighten our self-esteem and move toward our personal and professional goals with clear vision and purpose….

David’s background in arts and education, combined with a solid understanding of CBT, and his passion for Equality Advocacy drive every aspect of his work as a motivational speaker, personal development facilitator and a writer.

Stuart Milk, nephew of Harvey Milk and Equality Advocate, has said“I love your work, which is vital to show the richness of embracing and celebrating our wonderful diversity. As Harvey would say, you’re bringing medicine into the world that the world needs! Thank you!”

I think that out of everyone in society LGBT people, especially LGBT youth, are subjected to most negative energy and the most negative portrayals of themselves and so it’s really important for us as a community to give back and to let people see that the sun can shine

ALAN CUMMING
He (Harvey Milk) had great confidence in me; I really felt that the basic message was “you can do it”. He was a cheerleader first and then he would deconstruct content second. I think there was always this attention to helping somebody really feel that they can make their way.

If you look at his speeches that’s there; there’s really this broad stroke that’s about positivity and confidence so you’re on the right path in terms of carrying on his work that way.
For me as a care professional, working in chem-dependency, to have any kind of guidebook that talks about self-esteem or how to keep people from committing suicide…I’m all for it. The few kids that have shown up that had suicide ideation, quite honestly, I didn’t have a template for what to tell them so I had to rely upon my intuition but I have no idea if I’m doing the right thing. I definitely feel that the therapeutic community, the psychological therapeutic community has a role to play in LGBT civil rights and I applaud you for doing this.
I was reading some of your pages on your website and I thought, “This is the antidote to my suicidal friend. If he could just read this, it would help him rephrase what he is defaulting to now.”
This is a very spiritually adept person; he’s practiced many disciplines, meditates, and he’s gone through all kinds of personal growth stuff and, because of his propensity to respond to his own addiction, he really ends up in these suicidal places. It’s really heartbreaking, you know and I don’t know why I got saved, why I didn’t, why I figured it out, how not to do that. When I see this happening to him, it’s just mind-boggling and it really is good to have a map available to find your way out of those negative moods.
DAN NICOLETTA

For young people coming to terms with their sexuality it’s really important that they have positive, high achieving role models as a way of boosting their self esteem and confidence. This kind of book shares the experience of a very diverse group of LGBT people. Individual and collective experience offers the inspiration and motivation for LGBT people to do something worthwhile with their lives and live their dream.
PETER TATCHELL

There are two ways you can approach not fitting in.  If you get to see it as a blessing, feeling like an Outsider can eventually give you the freedom and license to create your own world, follow your own goals, and make your own reality.  I’ve always thought it must be a lot harder for those who effortlessly belong – how much stronger the temptation to just blend in and be a non-questioning sheep!  Yes, there is pain. Feelings of rejection, confusion, self-doubt.  But think of those negatives in a positive light:  you have the chance to acquire resilience, fortitude, understanding and the realization but you have one life to live, so you absolutely have the right to live it your way!

It’s no shame to get help and inspiration from others, which is why David Watters ‘Never Blend In’, is so timely.
TRISHA GODDARD

At all times, but especially as an adolescent you need to be told “You are not alone” – there is no more positive and euphoric feeling than the discovery that others, including people of courage, genius, insight, passion, talent and charm felt the kind of feelings you feel. Especially when society, religion and the world tell you that those feelings are wrong.
I have to modify that with this point though: some people growing up LGBT will certainly want affirmation that they are not alone, but they will also (quite rightly IMHO) resist the idea that there is a “type” and that they fall into a categorisation. Such is the human paradox, yearning to assimilated and demanding to be treated as unique and apart. A part of the tribe and apart from the tribe. There are plenty of young LGBT people I know or have known who hate the idea of any sort of ghetto or connection with others. I’m Jewish and I’ll fight against anti-Semitism, but I’ll also raise issues about Israel’s violations of human rights and express my happy atheism and contempt for much of Judaism… It’s not a question of “hurrah, there’s a role model, now I know who I am and who my people are and where I belong in
the world.”
STEPHEN FRY
Role models are described as those individuals who we ‘aspire to’ and who provide strong and achievable targets that we can emulate in pursuit of our career or personal aims. This book breaks down the common stereotypes of gay people and unveils a more realistic perspective, chronicling the success of many gay role models that others aspire to.
In “Never Blend In” David Watters has brought together a number of role models in one publication featuring successful gay artists, scientists and entrepreneurs, who share their experiences and take you on their journey.  These are men and women with whom you can relate, whose stories will inspire and motivate you and leave you ready to move forward, both personally and professionally.
Be inspired by the successful members of the gay community; real men and women. Read about the challenges they faced along the way, what helped to keep them going, and what it takes to make a small business, a life, a success.
This book illustrates the breadth and creativity of gays everywhere.  It is a pioneering work and the success stories of inspirational gay role models from a wide variety of backgrounds should be made available in every library, every school.  These are men and women you can aspire to but who have all shown just what it takes to become a role model – determination, courage and an unwavering desire to succeed.
“Never Blend In” brings you some amazing candidates all of whom have succeeded in very different ways. They each have inspiring stories to tell about their achievements and future ambitions, yet I noticed they all had one thing in common they were passionate about what they did.
So in reality gays are still struggling for acceptance and to reach the top of the ladder. However, I think for the gay who enters the celebrity arena or who decides to do his/her own thing - they no longer have to do it at the expense of their happiness- they can do things on their own terms. For many it will provide them with the work/ life balance that wasn’t available for them in the past.  It’s vital we have gays in big business and we need more gays to be there. I think companies need to realize they can’t operate without gays.  But they do need to provide the very thing we all tend to take for granted – the basic right of being given the same opportunities and earning power as str8 men.  We are mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, lovers, and friends. We are like you.
Anthony Spiteri, BS, MSc, PhD (Psychology)

The book NEVER BLEND IN is a provocative look into the lives of successful people who live in a world where the odds are stacked against us. It is important to give hope to the younger generation with diverse sexual orientations to see that we can be happy, healthy, and successful players in this game we call life.  I hope by telling my story in this book, I can, in some small way, make life easier for those who march to the beat of a different drum.  I am a rebel with a cause…you can either march with me, or step out of my way.
I am excited to order several copies of your book and share them with friends and family as gifts. I may try to use it with one of my classes that I teach at my college on the psychology of diversity.

Gladeana McMahon, As one of the leading personal development and transformational coaches in the UK, Gladeana was instrumental in founding the Association for Coaching for which she now holds the positions of Life Fellow and Vice President.

The Book that David Watters is proposing is long overdue as there is little written on the topic of LGBT issues.
Positive role models are important to individuals whether they be LGBT individuals talking about their experiences or the family and friends of such individuals who can model acceptance and positive affirmation.  Therapists are likely to be interested in such a book in a bid to understand the specific needs of those who identify as LGBT considering the best ways to work with such individuals and/or their families.  Academics are likely to find the book useful in considering issues around diversity and, of course, the general public will also benefit as a book of this sort educates the reader. This book will also help LGBT individuals to understand their situation and consider how to develop a deep and meaningful sense of self-worth.  It will also help such individuals understand how best to help those around them to understand their situation as much as it will educate family and friends.

NEVER BLEND IN, and the efforts of writer David Watters, is a brilliant collection and resource of openly LGBT and successful role models across the globe.  The value to all, especially for the younger generation, is paramount.  The presentation of individuals who are successful, determined, active and visible in our communities will undoubtedly inspire all who read this collection, to do better, become a better person, and strive for greatness in their lives and that of others.
The LGBT community has often been portrayed in a less than favorable light – NEVER BLEND IN rips that inaccurate veil off, and offers a face and portrait of today’s LGBT community, its leaders, history, accomplishments and potential.
Herb Sosa, Editor|Publisher – Ambiente Magazine
& President – Unity Coalition|Coalicion Unida

“NEVER BLEND IN is a vital project that is sure to make a difference in many young (and not so young!) lives. As the author of HEATHER HAS TWO MOMMIES, I have seen firsthand how important it is for children to see a family like theirs portrayed in the media. It is just as important for teenagers and adults to see themselves represented in books, in film, and on TV.
By showcasing people who are out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender and living authentic lives, David Watters is sending an important message to those struggling to come out and be out: You CAN be yourself and live a full, satisfying, meaningful, and glorious life.”–
Lesléa Newman

This book is crucially important because we need to continually shed light on the struggles and adversity facing the LGBT community.
We can never become complacent in our fight for equal rights and we need to remember the trailblazers who ignited the spark for the flame of progress that burns today.
As role models following in the legacy of others like Harvey Milk, we need to stand as proud confident people and continue to broaden the path of acceptance for those that follow us.
JACK MACKENROTH

“Never Blend In: The Legacy of Harvey Milk” is an important work that will inspire and lead at the same time.  Harvey’s legacy to us is one of activism, “can do” spirit and honesty.
This project authored and edited by David Watters will help certainly reach out and touch a generation of young people who will be the ones to carry on his legacy by helping transform our perceptions of the LGBT community and lay the foundation for a healthy and whole sense of self.

…we are in the fight for our very lives. NEVER BLEND IN says that we are committed to living out in the open, as we have a right to do. NEVER BLEND IN, means never settle for second best or the notion that we are “second class citizens” I will NEVER blend in.
SIMONE CAMPBELL

I always feel inspired by someone everyday. I think we should learn something new each day from anywhere or anyone. I’m inspired right now, by you, answering your intelligent questions Mr. David Watters. It’s not often I get to answer some great meaningful questions. So Bravo!!!

There’s plenty of times in this world where we can feel isolated and alone and anytime we can find a source of community, a feeling of being a part of something bigger than ourselves; that can provide tremendous inspiration and solace, then that’s invaluable.

PRESS RELEASE

Fourth gay marriage bid rejected

Richard and David will now take legal action

Gay marriage ban violates Human Rights Act, they say

‘Equal Love’ campaign seeks gay marriages & straight civil partnerships

London, UK – 2 December 2010
http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?topic=14942&uid=35320687969

A gay couple’s application for a civil marriage licence was today refused by Greenwich register office in south-east London.

David Watters (40) and Richard Hull (49) were turned away on the grounds that UK law states that marriage partners have to be male and female.

Richard and David now plan to challenge this restriction in the courts, arguing that the ban on same-sex marriage violates the Human Rights Act – specifically Articles 14 (protection against discrimination), 12 (the right to marry) and 8 (the right to respect for family life).

Responding to the refusal of their request for a marriage licence, David Watters said:

“Being refused the licence didn’t exactly come as a surprise. After all, the five other couples who have gone before us have been turned away. What does surprise me is that society still tolerates homophobic discrimination in marriage law.

“My emotions are mixed. There is a great sense of sadness and anger that my love for Richard is not accorded the same respect and rights as the love that heterosexuals share.

“It is overwhelming to be part of such an historic campaign. I have an immense feeling of hope and positivity about the eventual outcome. Richard and I are here for the long haul. The justice of our claim for marriage equality will win out sooner or later,” he said.

His partner Richard Hull added:

“Like David, I am neither surprised nor shocked at the outcome today. But I am annoyed and upset that I cannot celebrate my love for David by going through a marriage ceremony; instead we are expected to settle for what I regard as second best, a civil partnership.

“Our love is no less than that shared by a heterosexual couple. Speaking as a gay man who once had a heterosexual marriage, I feel cheated. I was allowed to get married when I was engaged to a woman but I am denied this option when I want to marry David.

“I feel privileged to be joining the other couples on the Equal Love Campaign, knowing that we will eventually change the law, so that I can celebrate my love for David by marrying him. I don’t want to settle for a civil partnership which, for us, is not an adequate option,” he concluded.

David Watters is a personal development consultant, writer on equality issues and author of Never blend in: The legacy of Harvey Milk. Richard Hull is a catering manager and chef. They have been together in a relationship for six years.

See more quotes from Richard and David towards the end of this news release.

The couple’s bid is part of the new Equal Love campaign, which is seeking to overturn the twin prohibitions on gay civil marriages and heterosexual civil partnerships.

www.equallove.org.uk

The ‘Equal Love’ campaign is coordinated by human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell and sponsored by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender human rights organisation OutRage!, with the support of the Peter Tatchell Human Rights Fund.

“A similar ban on Asian or Jewish marriages would provoke fierce condemnation and mass protests. So why are so many people silent about the ban on gay marriages?” queried Equal Love coordinator Peter Tatchell, who attended the register office with Richard and David today.

“We see the Equal Love campaign as a historic quest for justice; morally equivalent to the campaigns to overturn the bans on inter-racial marriage in apartheid South Africa and the Deep South of the USA.

“Prohibiting same-sex civil marriages and opposite-sex civil partnerships is a form of sexual apartheid – one law for gay couples and another law for heterosexual partners. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

“David and Richard are the sixth of eight couples to challenge these twin bans, and the fourth same-sex couple to do so.

“They are the second same-sex couple to file an application at Greenwich register office. The first same-sex couple, Rev Sharon Ferguson and her partner Franka, applied on 2 November and were also rejected.

“A total of eight couples will file applications at their local register offices. Four same-sex couples will apply for civil marriages and four heterosexual couples will apply for civil partnerships. One couple will make an application every week until 14 December.

“We expect that all eight couples will be turned away. They will then launch a joint legal action to end sexual orientation discrimination in civil marriage and civil partnership law,” said Mr Tatchell.

STATEMENT FROM DAVID EQUALITY WATTERS

David Equality Watters (40) is a personal and professional development consultant with NBI ASSOCIATES (www.nbiassociates.co.uk), a writer on social equality and author of the soon to be published, NEVER BLEND IN: THE LEGACY OF HARVEY MILK.

Staff at Greenwich Register Office were incredibly kind, understanding and actually personally interested in the Equal Love Campaign.

We were treated, by Pam and Tom, with absolute respect. Both staff were highly professional and in fact apologised that they could not , at this time, offer us a civil marriage and wished us Good Luck with the campaign.

Both Richard and I were apprehensive, in light of how appallingly Colette and Katie were treated in Hampshire, but felt confident that we would not suffer the same indignity since Sharon and Franka had previously attended Greenwich Register Office (2 Nov 2010) and had had a positive experience.

Being refused the licence didn’t exactly come as a surprise.

After all, we know the score; five other couples have gone before us and the law, as it stands, is very clear.

What does surprise me is that society still tolerates any form of inequality.

The emotions are mixed really.

Of course there is a great sense of sadness and anger that my love for Richard is not regarded as highly or taken as seriously as the love that others, who happen to be heterosexual, share.

It is overwhelming to be part of such an historical campaign  and I have an immense feeling of hope and positivity about the eventual outcome.

This is only the first step towards changing public perceptions about the meaning of marriage and towards altering ingrained beliefs about the second class social status of same sex couples; I am well aware of this.

Richard and I are here for the long haul; truth will always win out sooner or later and if it has to take some time then so be it.

When the law is eventually changed the positive impact on society as a whole will be immeasurable. The implications for Richard and myself, for the other couples and for those who believe in the democratic right to free choice will be far reaching and profound.

I was touched that, on such a snowy day, our friends Kirsty, Leonie and Harm walked there to support us.  We are incredibly fortunate to have good friends who understand the purpose of this campaign and who view our relationship as equal to their own.

These are Richard’s thoughts on today’s events:

Richard Hull (49) is a chef and catering manager.

Like David, I am neither surprised nor shocked at the outcome today. I am more annoyed and upset that I cannot celebrate my love for David by simply going through a marriage ceremony;  instead we have to settle for, in my opinion, second best.

As David has already said, our love is no less than that shared by a heterosexual couple.

Speaking from experience as a gay man who once entered a heterosexual marriage, I feel strongly that a marriage is based more on gender than love.

I feel priviledged to be joining Peter Tatchell and the other couples on the Equal Love Campaign, knowing that we will change the law so that I can celebrate my love for David by entering into a marriage and not settling for the civil partnership which, for us, is not an adequate option.

LONDON, 2 December 2010 - David Watters and Richard Hull applied for a civil marriage licence at Greenwich Register Office at the Town Hall in Woolwich on Thursday 2 December in a direct challenge to the UK’s legal ban on same-sex marriage. Their application was refused. The couple plan to take legal action in the courts to strike down the prohibition on gay marriages. PHOTOS: Chris Houston

Richard and David will now take legal action

Gay marriage ban violates Human Rights Act, they say

‘Equal Love’ campaign seeks gay marriages & straight civil partnerships

WHY CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS AREN’T GOOD ENOUGH

DAVID E. WATTERS & RICHARD HULL WILL BE CHALLENGING THE BAN ON CIVIL MARRIAGE IN THE UK ON 2 DEC 2010.

THEY ARE PART OF THE EQUAL LOVE CAMPAIGN, ALONGSIDE 6 OTHER COUPLES.

BELOW ARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON WHY CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS ARE SIMPLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

DAVID EQUALITY WATTERS

Civil Partnerships were initially, I believe, a significant move in the right direction; a necessary stepping stone towards equality and many lesbian and gay couples embraced the opportunity to formally and legally celebrate their commitment to each other. The reality, from my personal viewpoint, is that in creating a separate institution based on sexual orientation a clear sense of otherness was conveyed.

Civil Partnerships are not as fully embraced or “accepted” socially as civil or religious marriages and this perpetuates a continued “us and them” attitude; reinforcing, rather than challenging, the inferiority of gay relationships.

The existence of Civil Partnerships played a role in shifting public perceptions and, perhaps, prepared our society for the next step along the pathway towards true social equality.

Marriage inequality perpetuates an inferior and superior class of citizen.

RICHARD JOSEPH HULL

Civil Partnerships are an invention, which cause a divide between homosexual and heterosexual couples; they are a legal form of segregation, much like apartheid but based upon sexual orientation rather than race. We are given no choice in how we would like to celebrate our relationship and are offered a compromise which doesn’t reflect our personal aspirations but instead devalues us.

David Watters, a graduate of Trinity College of Music, London and the Institute of Education, University of London, has worked internationally as a singer, director and teacher for more than 20 years and has taught drama and music within socially and culturally diverse settings.

He is a personal and professional development associate with The Pacific Institute (www.pacificinstitute.co.uk), personal tutor, freelance writer and founding member of NBI Associates and Tech Queens.

David, who regularly writes for www.ambiente.us, One Nation and Polari, has beenchampioned by Stuart Milk, nephew of Harvey Milk and Equality Advocate, who has said: “I love your work, which is vital to show the richness of embracing and celebrating our wonderful diversity. As Harvey would say, you’re bringing medicine into the world that the world needs! Thank you!”

His background in arts and education, combined with a solid understanding of CBT, and his passion for Equality Advocacy drive every aspect of his work as a personal development facilitator and a writer.

David is currently finalizing his book, Never Blend In: The Legacy of Harvey Milk which supports and is supported by The Trevor Project.

These people, who are successfully modelling admirable qualities and character traits such as determination, diligence, vision and consistent effort, can only serve to inspire and encourage the younger generation, or anyone questioning their validity, to lead a balanced, fulfilling and dignified life.

Notable voices in the book are Harvey’s colleagues, Anne Kronenberg and Danny Nicoletta; actors Stephen Fry, Alan Cumming and Anthony Rapp; musician Darren Hayes (Savage Garden); Sordid Lives writer Del Shores; Michael Musto; filmmaker, Parvez Sharma; Calpernia Addams; NBA star John Amaechi; Rabbi Denise Eger, Rev.

STALKING ALAN CUMMING

Blue Plaque for Peter Tatchell

I was thrilled and honored to be invited to attend the blue plaque unveiling for Peter Tatchell, campaigner for human rights, gay freedom and social justice, on Wednesday 29 September 2010 at 11am outside 62 Arrol House, Rockingham Street, London SE1 6QL.

The unveiling was followed by a reception at the nearby Cuming Museum, Walworth Road, SE17, from 12 midday to 1pm.

Sir Ian McKellen was there to unveil the blue plaque honouring Peter Tatchell and he made a wonderful, humorous and heartfelt speech.

For over 40 years, Peter Tatchell has spearheaded campaigns for gay rights and human rights in Britain and across the globe. In 1983 he was the defeated Labour candidate in the Bermondsey by-election – the dirtiest, most violent election in Britain in the twentieth century. He co-founded OutRage! in 1990 and he twice attempted a citizen’s arrest of President Mugabe of Zimbabwe on charges of human rights abuses.

Peter has also written or contributed to over 20 books such as, The Battle for Bermondsey, Democratic Defence, Europe in the Pink – Lesbian & Gay Equality in The New Europe and We Don’t Want to March Straight: Masculinity, Queers and the Military. He has also authored over 3,000 published articles.

Last year Peter was named Campaigner of the Year at The Observer Ethical Awards.

Peter Tatchell will be present on the day to make an acceptance speech. Sir Ian McKellen will also speak and unveil the blue plaque.

In addition, the ceremony will be attended by representatives from the Southwark LGBT Forum, the Blue Plaque steering group, and Southwark Council. An opening speech will be made by Councillor Lewis Robinson, Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport.

Commenting on being awarded a Blue Plaque, Peter Tatchell said:

“It is a big honour. I am very grateful to the people who voted for me, especially since there were other notable, worthy and deserving nominees. I hope my receipt of this award will encourage others to campaign for human rights. I have lived in Southwark most of my life and I am very proud to be part of its long, illustrious history of distinguished authors, playwrights, scientists, inventors and social reformers,” said Mr Tatchell.

“I appreciate this award, but the greatest honour I’ve had is the privilege to know and work with so many amazing, courageous human rights defenders in Britain and around the world. That’s the real, true honour to me.

“Nevertheless, after so many years of demonisation by the tabloids, right-wingers, homophobes and even some people on the left, it is great to receive this recognition.

“I was born in Melbourne, Australia, but I have lived and worked in Southwark most of my life, since 1978. During this time, I’ve been involved in many local community struggles.

“When I was Chair of the Rockingham Estate tenant’s association in 1980, we fought a successful campaign to turn derelict Dicken’s Square into a neighbourhood park and adventure playground.

“The biggest battles were against the property speculators who grabbed prime riverside sites, like Hay’s Wharf and Surrey Docks, and squeezed out long-standing working class residents. Most of the redevelopment of the last 30 years has been offices and luxury flats for the rich. Local people have benefited very little. That’s why I stood for parliament in the 1983 Bermondsey by-election. I wanted a fairer deal for the people of Southwark and Bermondsey.

“I love the history of North Southwark. It’s crammed with connections to Geoffrey Chaucer, Michael Faraday, William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. I especially appreciate the Red Bermondsey history, when Labour won control of Bermondsey Borough Council in 1922, and led the world in municipal socialism. It initiated pioneering schemes to replace the slums with a garden city. People came from all over the world to marvel at the council-run “people’s palaces” – the new houses with gardens, the health centre, baths and public library. The Bermondsey Labour MP, Dr Alfred Salter, was a great champion of working class people.

“The 1983 Bermondsey by-election was the dirtiest, most violent election in Britain for over 100 years. I was attacked in the street, had my flat smashed, there were arson attempts on my home and three attempts by drivers to run me down in the street. I got a bullet through the door and I received dozens of threats to kill me. But I have no regrets. I stood against the developers, on the side of local people. I did what I believed was right.

“The current plans for the redevelopment of the Elephant and Castle are selling local people short. Only a small proportion will be council and social housing for rent to low-income families. The developers will make billions, while the local community will get relatively little. With a development of this size, not only should the existing council housing stock be fully replaced, but the developers should provide at least an additional 500 council houses for needy families in the surrounding areas.

“My political inspirations are people like Mahatma Gandhi, Sylvia Pankhurst, Martin Luther King and, to some extent, Malcolm X and Rosa Luxemburg. I’ve adapted some of their ideas and methods to my contemporary struggle for human rights rights, and invented a few of my own.

“My proudest achievements as a human rights campaigner have been my two attempted citizen’s arrests of the Zimbabwean dictator, Robert Mugabe. They helped draw international attention to the human rights abuses perpetrated by his murderous regime. I was glad to support the people of Zimbabwe who are fighting for democracy and human rights. Even though I got badly beaten by Mugabe’s bodyguards and have ended up with some brain and eye damage, I have no regrets,” said Mr Tatchell.

A MESSAGE FROM PETER:

Wanted: 1,000 people to donate £5 a month

Please support Peter Tatchell’s campaigns for LGBT rights and human rights, in Britain and worldwide. To make a donation: www.tatchellrightsfund.org/donations.htm

Peter Tatchell writes:

I started my work for human rights 43 years ago, so that we could all feel free and live in a better world. In the last four decades we’ve made great progress. Many injustices and inequalities have been overturned.

But more needs to be done to secure food, clean water, housing, education and health-care for everyone on this planet.

For LGBT people in Britain, the battle for equality is not yet fully won. There are still the bans on same-sex marriage and on gay blood donors. LGBT refugees are often sent back to violent homophobic countries. Our equality laws include exemptions that allow religious organisations to discriminate.

As well as my campaigns in the UK, I am working to support human rights defenders and LGBT people in countries like Uganda, Iran, Jamaica, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia and Zimbabwe.

Many people do not realise that I am unpaid, and that I don’t have an office or staff to assist with the help I give to thousands of individuals every year, from asylum seekers to victims of harassment and miscarriages of justice.

I am working 12 to 18 hours a day, seven days a week. I’m often tired and ill. I desperately need an office and staff support, to relieve the pressure and to increase the effectiveness of my campaigns.

I am fundraising at the moment and hoping to find a thousand people to give £5 a month, or more, by standing order, towards the cost of hiring staff to help me – and for office space. I invite you to make a donation (details of the various methods below). Give whatever you can afford and please persuade your friends to do the same. I need to raise £60,000 a year in regular income to sustain my work in the long-term.

Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true

As a young child and into my late teens, I was introverted and found it difficult to connect with people my own age. I felt different to my peers; I couldn’t relate or blend in and subconsciously, and this is only in retrospect, I didn’t want to blend in.

My “truth” was that I was a little bit weird and, as a teenager especially, that wasn’t a great thing to be. I was bullied in high school and mocked by two particular teachers at a time when my parents had separated and my sexuality was beginning to become evident.
At this time, as you can imagine, my self-esteem was low and this impacted upon my ability to learn, retain and achieve in any area that wasn’t entirely stimulating.

I sought out likeminded people, teachers and students, who shared my interest for art, creative writing and music and was fortunate enough to find validation from those teachers whose passions I shared.

I also found role models beyond my small world; Boy George, Freddie Mercury, Jimmy Somerville, Kate Bush, Morrissey, Neil Tennant, and Toyah Wilcox, whose inspirational lyrics told of very different lives and worlds to my own.

It was music that brought me to London where, at 21, equally terrified and exhilarated, I took a place at Trinity College of Music. Now, this might sound like I had developed self-confidence but the opposite was actually true. All I knew was that I wanted to sing, to communicate through music and do this until someone discovered that I was faking it!

When I won my first singing prize, I remember thinking that some sort of miracle had just occurred and vowed then to go on to the next challenge and the one after that. Classmates seemed super confident; some to the point of arrogance, and this intimidated me.

Self doubt and the fear of being found out had an extremely detrimental effect on my development; I naively believed negative feedback and took it to be accurate without questioning the motives or hidden agenda behind the comments.

It is only with hindsight that I can see how my poor self image led me to set myself limited goals and how different the 4 years at Trinity might have been had I known.

Professional work did come, and this did validate me, but I still felt that the companies who had employed me would realise their error and tell me to go.

So you see, because of my low self image I habitually criticised and doubted myself, believing that what others had told me was true and then limiting my expectations of life; I subconsciously created the negative outcomes that I felt were deserved.

My past conditioning, that I was no-good, meant that I truly believed that I was not worthy of the things that I desired and it was only after many years that I began to change this perception, heighten my self-esteem and move toward personal and professional goals with clear vision and purpose.

Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books. Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin. Believe nothing just because someone else believes it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true.

Dedicated to the cause, David aims to help clarify that equality is not about race and gender it’s about fairness and the freedom. It’s imperative that we are all treated alike and not individualised. Simone Campbell is SERIOUSLY funny…

SIMONE CAMPBELL

My early life….funny how we block out what we THINK does not define us. I am an East Coast gal through and through. Originally from New York. I’m the youngest of four children, and as I like to remind my Mother, the only “planned” child. My parents had two girls and a boy…so…they were hoping for another boy. I used to tell my Mother..”Meh…you got half your wish”.

Simone Campbell brings humor and humility to every aspect of her personal and professional life.

A committed advocate for true social equality, Simone models behaviors and character traits such as diligence, determination, personal authenticity and a sincerity which can only serve to encourage, inspire and motivate those who are fortunate enough to know her.

As a major supporter and vital contributor to the book, NEVER BLEND IN: THE LEGACY OF HARVEY MILK, Simone reflected on her position as a role model, “Every time I show up at an event, every time I get up in front of a classroom of kids and tell my story (I was on the Speaker’s Bureau for Community United Against Violence for about 10 years), every time I walk on stage and pick up a microphone I am keenly aware of the position I am in.

As an entertainer…and an OUT one, I have a moral responsibility to hold myself up to a higher standard. To live…above the fray. I am not sure where comedy will lead me. I’ve tried to separate being a comic and being an activist…and failed miserably, so I figured why fight it. I embrace it everyday. And I am thankful for it everyday”.

Change is often slow but it is inevitable. Change will come when social perceptions are informed by those who live with authenticity, by those who acknowledge the stereotypes but also present a wider palate which illustrates the true diversity of our wonderful human race.

In truth, it’s really quite simple and perhaps a little clichéd (clichés are clichés because often they are true)…Love will always conquer hate, courage will conquer fear and with her warm, wise and witty words, Simone Campbell will change the world…one mind at a time!

Our society, in all its grandness is flawed, and like individual people, is slow to change. It can change with people championing the cause, voting until it hurts. People need to tell their stories. Shout from the rooftops that we will NOT go quietly into that good night, and to lead with the one thing we know is universal….LOVE.
