National Diversity Award Winner, David E. Watters, is a teacher, motivational speaker and writer; a passionate equality advocate, committed to enhancing the lives of young people and adults who may feel marginalised or limited by labels.

As a teacher, he is committed to developing the whole person through creatively challenging students to embrace their unique value, and that of others, to encourage them to fulfill their full potential. He is nominated for an Excellence in Diversity Award 2015, for his contribution to enhancing the diversity agenda within education.

Since graduating from The Institute of Education, University of London, David has gone on to train as a mediator, and is a qualified facilitator for The Pacific Institute. 

As Director of NBI Associates, David devises and delivers engaging, enjoyable and interactive Diversity and Cultural Enhancement workshops utilizing Cognitive Behavioural and Performing Arts strategies for individual, corporate and academic clients.

Watters is also the founder and coordinator of the inclusive, inspirational and international Give ‘em Hope Campaign; an online initiative which utilises all available social networks to encourage and uplift those who doubt their validity, feel isolated or limited by labels, through the sharing of written and video testimonies. The campaign was honoured at the National Diversity Awards 2014 when it won the Community Organisation Award (Multi-Strand).

Watters was a key player in the Equal Love Campaign UK; taking the British Government to the European Court of Human Rights in 2010 and successfully achieving Marriage Equality for same-sex couples in the United Kingdom.

His passion and expertise has brought many opportunities to write and speak on social change and his book, NEVER BLEND IN, brings together this wealth of experience and the voices of those whom he has met along the way.

Leadership and Management –  A proactive and collaborative member of any Educational Management Team; providing principled, practical leadership on inclusion, equality and diversity; developing departmental vision and supporting a team to realize this vision; keeping abreast of policy initiatives and trends to help in ‘future proofing’ the work of the organization; creating a culture that enables the team to provide teaching and learning that is up to date, innovative, relevant and which meets development and progression requirements. Providing a collaborative, equitable and respectful style of management in accordance with organizational policies and procedures; regarding induction for permanent and agency staff, auditing staff development needs and supporting the monitoring and review of the outcomes and impact of these. Identify annual learning and development activities as part of the business planning process and develop an appropriate L&D budget for the year, monitoring costs to ensure they stay on track. Reviewing the learning and development policy and monitoring compliance; encouraging an active and innovative approach to learning and development which is personalized and learner-centered; planning and ensuring the development of courses which meet all stakeholder needs. 

Performance Management – Ownership of organisational performance appraisal process and ensuring that this supports the performance and development of all team members in achieving personal and organisational goals. Leading the provision of L&D support, providing guidance, support, materials, and extensive face to face training.

Learning and Development – Building a “library” of core learning and development activities that enable team members to acquire skills and capabilities for the future and that reach our diverse audiences. Evaluate effectiveness of learning and development solutions; demonstrating effectiveness and measuring return on investment (ROI) and business impact. Partner with internal and external subject matter experts to develop and deliver learning and development programmes. Support managers to identify appropriate learning and development solutions which enhance individual or team performance. Within an academic setting; providing qualification and non-qualification education for a range of learners, in both corporate and academic settings, devising and delivering suitable strategies to accommodate diverse needs. Flexible and innovative resource creation and delivery to achieve an optimum learning experience for all learners. Subject specifically, I have worked predominantly within Music, Media and Performing Arts and as a training facilitator I have provided staff development on cultural change, Equality and Diversity, resource development and encouraging learner efficacy. Most recently, I have been instrumental in the development of tutorial provision regarding compliance with Equality Legislation; this has involved staff training and ongoing quality monitoring. Promoting Learning and Development – Proactively raising the profile of learning and development through regular internal communications, attendance and chairing of team meetings, and the dissemination of information and tools e.g. 360 feedback; effective communication of learning and development policies and procedures and continuous review of internal learning and development processes to ensure that these are effective, efficient and results oriented.
