DARREN Hayes, who incidentally is in my book, NEVER BLEND IN, said this today, “I defended myself most of my elementary school years and half of highshool from bullies who knew I was gay even before I did. Being called the ‘F’ word and sometimes beaten up was just normal. I’m 43, I’ve been with Richard for 11 years, had a civil partnership in 2005 and was so fortunate and blessed to come to the United States in 2013 where this beautiful country recognized my marriage and made our union legal, just like any other marriage. I’m tired of being bullied, I’m tired of men in suits telling women what to do with their bodies and happy families like mine and Richard’s that we are a stain on this world. This man is extremely dangerous if you value the compassion, inclusiveness and loving way most human rights movements have changed the world. Prior to a huge shift in public thinking, I lived for years in shame, hating myself and sometimes so depressed I wanted to leave this planet. Imagine living in a world where the majority of the laws told you, you were an abomination, you were not equal. Marriage is not just a piece of paper, it’s how the world views and accepts the recipients. Being married makes me feel like I’m no longer shut out of the happy ever after every child deserves. Please, please if you love me, or anyone LGBTQ – do not support this man.”
